The lab was established on January of 2025 at the Center for Research and Advanced Studies (Cinvestav), Unit Irapuato (Guanajuato, Mexico). Our research goal is to understand the connection between the emergence of new genes and whether they become relevant for the organism that harbors them. We're also interested in the emergence of gene families that might enable important evolutionary transitions.
About the campus (Cinvestav Irapuato)
The Unit Irapuato of Cinvestav is located in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. The campus was established in 1981 in an effort to improve the agronomic development of the region. Since then, the Institute stands as one of the best Biology Research Institutes in the country, hosting for some of the most brilliant Mexican scientists in the research fields of Ecology, Plant Sciences, Biotechnology, Developmental Biology, Computational Biology, Genomics and Evolution.
The institute provides an adequate infrastructure for the needs of our lab, including wet lab facilities and a High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster. The neighbor Institute for Advanced Genomics also provides sequencing services for genomic and transcriptomic analyses.

About the PI
I received my Ph.D. degree and my Bachelor's in Biology from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). During my Ph.D., I worked with Prof. Luis E. Eguiarte to study the evolutionary dynamics of pumpkin genomes using comparative and population genomics. Afterwards, I worked as a Humboldt Research Fellow in the Department of Algal Development and Evolution at the Max Planck Institute for Biology (Tübingen, Germany) with Prof. Susana M. Coelho, where I worked on the evolution of brown algae (Phaeophyceae), a eukaryotic lineage that evolved complex multicellularity independently from plants or animals.
